Tourism Sustainability Council

Sustainable tourism focuses on making a low impact on the environment and local cultures while helping to support local tourist industries and creating employment. The goal of sustainable tourism is to endorse sustainable development. Sustainable tourism focuses on natural environments as a large and growing part of the tourism industry. The purpose of sustainable tourism is to advocate for responsible tourism on issues such as environmental integrity, social justice, cultural awareness, and economic development. Sustainable tourism emphases on all stakeholders (government, nongovernment, profit, nonprofit, local communities, and ethnic groups) being responsible for achieving sustainable development while maintain environmental and social awareness and integrity.

Organizations like the Tourism Sustainability Council seek to encourage sustainable tourism practices and education. The Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria are a range of 37 voluntary initiatives for members of the tourism industry to follow in order to reach sustainable means for the environmental and cultural sustainability and protection while utilizing the tourism industry to assist in the alleviation of poverty. The Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria was launched in 2008 by the former Partnership of the Global Sustainable Criteria, which is currently the Tourism Sustainability Council (TSCT) after merging with the Tourism Sustainability Stewardship.

The TSC is a coalition of over 40 public, private, nonprofit, and governmental organizations including the United Nations World Tourism Organizations, the United Nations Environment Program, and the United Nations Foundation. The objective of the TSC is the establishment of universal sustainable principles. In order to reach their objective the GSCT Partnership creates a set of criteria based of the primary principles of the sustainable tourism theory, which are effective and efficient sustainable planning, increase the social-economical benefits of the local and tourist communities, and reduce the harmful impact of the tourism industry on local cultures of the environment.
